The common ties between the Union and Confederate armies were easily noticed in the close resemblance of the two armies’ uniforms. It was mainly the uniform colors that differed; grey for the Confederate uniform and blue for the Union army’s. Some southern volunteer militia units chose to wear blue uniforms early in the war, which naturally caused problems on the battlefield as they were sometimes fired on by other Confederate forces!

The early war period saw many different styles, trims and types of Confederate uniforms. These uniforms had more buttons and trim, and were usually designed prior to the war by the militia units themselves. With the adoption of Article 47 of the Regulations of the Army of the Confederate States, the uniforms became more standardized. They Confederate uniforms were never as complex as the union Army’s were but Article 47 helped in getting the rebel uniforms standardized. The South, as an army, pretty much had to start from scratch as far as a uniform goes.

At the beginning of the war the Confederate army was poorly supplied with uniforms and the variety of uniforms were as varied as the number of militias. Often times civilian clothing was worn in combination with regular uniform attire. There was even a Confederate militia from New Orleans that started the war in Revolutionary War uniforms and another in the colorful French Zouave outfits.

Confederate soldier’s uniforms are composed of frock coats, shell jackets, sack coats, and a variety of trousers and shirts. Grey is the official, or primary, uniform color.
