Uniform buttons fall into four main categories as far as Civil War button collections are concerned. The state's buttons, usually with the state's official seal, are very desirable for collectors. In both armies the different branches of service had there own button design. The Union Army, Navy, Marine forces as well as the support branches all used the American eagle in the design of their buttons. Most of the official Union, as well as the Confederate, buttons had the manufactures name inscribed on the back.
