Civil War Letters

Civil War letters and other authentic Civil War correspondence give a Civil War collection personality. These letters fall into several categories. You'll find official letters from either the Confederate or Union governments and they can be as simple as the as the granting of leave or an assignment of duty to an individual soldier. As in any war, the most dreaded official letter was the reporting of a soldier’s death to the family.

Many of the letters are correspondence from General and staff officers to other officers of rank and can be very interesting, as well as desirable, to a collector or reseller. These letters most often concern battle information and are sometimes orders from commanders to their subordinates concerning strategy in a battle or the war itself.

Of course, the most popular and numerous letters from Civil War soldiers are to family and other loved ones. These letters usually reflect the soldier or sailor’s patriotism, comradeship and can be happy and sad at the same time. The love letters are especially poignant with the soldier expressing his love for wife, family or sweetheart.
