American Civil War Movies and Documentaries

Movies of the Civil War are a great way to learn about the historical American Civil War. The movies are generally filmed in two categories. The historical movies allow the viewer to see and learn the causes of the Civil War, view the strategies and the outcomes of all the battles as well as getting an idea of the timeline of the Civil War. The drama movies on the other hand allow one to see stories of the soldiers in action, their personal lives and maybe some romance too.

Ken Burns’ “The Civil War” is the most acclaimed documentary on the period and was 1st aired on PBS in 1990 and featured such famous actors as Sam Waterston and Morgan Freeman. The History Channel presented several very good documentaries as well. “The History Channel Presents the Civil War” is one such movie and features the most famous Civil War battles and the leaders who fought those battles. Another of the many good History Channel documentaries is the four part series “Civil War Journal”.

Civil War drama movie fans will want to own the legendary John Wayne film “The Horse Soldiers”. A good newer movie with Jeff Daniels and Robert Duvall is “Gods and Generals”. For classic movie fans “They Died With Their Boots On”, “Drums Of The Deep South” and “Gone With The Wind” are must haves.
