Civil War Swords and Knives for Reenactments
Swords and knives were intimate weapons and were issued to practically every Union and Confederate soldier. Firearms of the day were not easily or quickly reloaded and the sword and knife became the weapons of choice for hand to hand combat. The bayonet was used in charging formations and was a thrusting weapon and not as effective in close quarters as a sword. Many of the soldiers, both Confederate and Union, carried personal fighting knives as well. Some of the issue swords were ornamental in nature and were only worn with dress uniforms such as the musician and surgeon swords.
There were several manufacturers of swords during the Civil War, a few of which were Mansfield and Lamb, Ames Manufacturing Company, the Roby Company, Emerson and Silver and P. S. Justice. There are several modern day companies that make authentic replica swords suitable for reenactments as well.
Here at Civil-War-Costumes we have a large selection of replica, or reproduction, Civil War swords, sabers and knives that are Civil War Reenactment ready.
