Civil War Swords and Other Edged Weapons

American Civil War swords, artillery short swords, sabers, curved edge cutlasses, bayonets, knives, lances and pikes are categorized as edged weapons and all are highly desirable for any Civil War relic collection. Civil War swords, sabers and bayonets were mostly standard issue and were largely used as part of the uniform of various branches and rank of service in both the Union and Confederate armies. The swords and sabers were different for General officers, staff officers and enlisted soldiers in that the higher the rank the more ornate the weapon. Swords in the Civil War were also largely symbolic of the wearer's rank or authority.

The Union Army issued swords to field and staff grade officers, infantry officers and cavalry soldiers and officers. The majority of the swords were the slightly upward curved saber type with a few straight edge swords present as well.

The Confederacy made some beautiful swords and sabers with elaborate and ornate hand guards and inscribed blades. The hand guards were as different as the many suppliers of the weapons. A lot of Confederate soldiers also favored the large D guard “Bowie” knife named after Jim Bowie the famous Alamo defender. Another Rebel favorite was the long straight edged “Arkansas toothpick”.
